This may seem silly, or obvious. However, many a woman has been stopped by a police officer only to be embarrassed enough to have to tell him that she left her license in another bag. Make sure you have it in the one you are carrying before you head out! If you are young enough to be of questionable drinking age, the driver's license is a necessity when meeting a friend or date for a cocktail. How horrible would it be to spend hours getting ready for a date, or getting excited after a long work week to meet friends on a Friday happy hour, only to get carded at the door of your local pub and not be allowed in? You can prevent this by checking your bag before you leave and making certain you have your driver's license with you.

Cell phone

These days, the cell phone is truly most everyone's lifeline. This is probably the most important item of all! It is just about as unlikely that you will forget this item as it is your keys, but should you leave it at home, you may as well just turn around. The chances of your leaving your phone at home increase if you are one of the any women who change handbags daily. If this is you, double-check your bag and make sure your phone is not in another one! There is nothing more embarrassing than getting caught in traffic and arriving somewhere late and not being able to extend the courtesy of a phone call to let the other party know. Don't let this happen to you; check your bag!

Pen

The fifth most important item is a pen. Even in the day and age where a cell phone contains almost everything you need and you can key in virtually all necessary information, sometimes it is just easier and quicker to jot something down. We can all remember a time where we frantically searched for a pen while listening to the radio and wanting to write something down. How about the many times something came to mind while driving and you forgot it by the time you got home because you had no way to commit it to memory? A pen takes up very little space in a handbag yet it is a crucial item to have.

So there you have it: Lipstick, mirror, driver's license, phone, and pen. You should need little else, but even if you are one to carry lots of "just in case" items with you, these five should be in your bag at all times.
